A former Senior Intelligence Officer, author Luis Elizondo gives a compelling overview of the various aspects of the UFO topic: The government cover up, the craft and non-human bodies held by the government, UFO crashes known to have happened and much more. It's a very good read.

While working at the Foreign Technology Desk in the Army, Colonel Philip J. Corso was assigned to work at a strange crash site in Roswell in 1947. 

This book is important in that it largely reflects today’s standard narrative on what happened at Roswell. Corso’s Roswell story is an essential part of understanding UFO history.

Vallee lays out his hypothesis that the UAP phenomenon acts as a control system over humanity. 

Vallee: “I believe that a powerful force has influenced the human race in the past and is again influencing it now. Does this force represent alien intervention, or does it originate entirely within human consciousness?”

The control system hypothesis is a commonly referenced concept in UFO circles. 

Messengers of Deception

Jacques Vallée

A discussion of cults relating to the UFO phenomenon, how those cults and mainstream UFO research organizations have been tracked and manipulated by the intelligence community. Vallee discusses what value these organizations bring to the intelligence community. He suggests some hypotheses that might answer these observations and discusses possible social consequences of the belief in UFOs.

The Cryptoterrestrials

Tonnies develops what today would be called an “ultraterrestrial” hypothesis. The term ultraterrestrial implies that the entities behind UFOs are from earth as opposed to extraterrestrial (from a distant planet). The Tonnies version of ultraterrestrials presented in this short book is both fascinating and a great way to break oneself free from the extraterrestrial hypothesis. 

Understanding High Strangeness

Jacques Vallée

Vallée discusses themes in high strangeness that have permeated human history such as fairy folk, leprechauns, demons, and Jinn. He then moves into more recent times noting sightings of airships (blimps) before airships were generally available and aircraft before they were generally available. He draws a line through history of improbable if not impossible sightings suggesting that perhaps all of these oddities are linked. Vallee notes  “the curious link between contents of the reports (of high strangeness) … and the progress of technology, from aerial ships to dirigibles to ghost rockets to flying saucers”. He develops a set of observable facts about high strangeness events and derives propositions about the nature of this high strangeness. This is viewed as a significant line of thought in the UFO community.

The Mothman Prophecies

John Keel

How to understand that which cannot be understood? John Keel takes us into this world, demonstrates the depth to which he investigates strange phenomenon and offers explanations as to their meaning. In the Mothman Prophecies, Keel details the numerous high strangeness events that occurred in the weeks before a bridge collapse in West Virginia in 1967. This is core reading in understanding the phenomenon.

Operation Trojan Horse

John Keel

Keel examines all manner of high strangeness episodes, notes patterns and proposes answers to what it all means. Like Vallee he links the UFO phenomenon with a variety of paranormal and supernatural phenomena both current and historical. As with all books addressing the area of high strangeness, the journey of reading the book challenges your worldview.

Robert Salas

The topic of UFOs and nuclear weapons has two seminal books, required reading on the path to comprehending the UFO / nuclear relationship. One is this book, Robert Salas’ UAPs and the Nuclear Puzzle, and the other is Robert Hasting’s UFOs and Nukes.  Salas was famously the officer in charge of a nuclear missile silo on the night in 1967 when a UFO hovered over Malstrom Air Force Base and shut down an entire flight of 10 nuclear tipped inter-continental ballistic missiles. In addition to telling of Salas’ experiences with UFOs, the book acts as a good backgrounder on the topic. Here’s a full review.

UFOs and Nukes

Robert Hastings

The second bit of required reading on the history of UFOs interacting with nuclear facilities is this classic by Robert Hastings. Hastings spent decades assembling data on the UFOs / nuclear interaction culminating in this 550 page book. It consists of hundreds of witness interviews, government documents and public reporting such as newspaper articles documenting dozens of events where UFOs were active around U.S. military facilities housing nuclear material.
